Instinct AI: Clearly Explained (and How to Set It Up)

What Instinct is, how it differs from ChatGPT, Claude and Hermes, the full setup, and what happened when I asked it to book my recycling centre slot.

I finally got access to Instinct, the invite-only AI personal assistant everyone's been talking about. Seems like every other YouTube channel got early access and I didn't. Not that I'm salty about that.

The first job I gave it was booking me a time slot at the Newquay recycling centre, so I could take all the stuff I have from moving house to the dump. It asked me a few questions, found the slots, booked it, put it in my calendar, and then cancelled it again when I asked.

So this is what Instinct is, how it's different to ChatGPT, Claude and the agents you build yourself, and the full setup, including the safety settings I'd check on day one. I published the video in October 2026, when Instinct was still invite only.

    What Is Instinct AI?

Instinct is a personal assistant that you just pick up your phone and text. You connect it to your iMessage or your WhatsApp, you ask it to do stuff, and it does it, like a personal assistant would.

The homepage is so simple, and that's the rest of the app as well. In Instinct's own words it "understands what you're working on and what's important to you" and connects to your applications and devices: email, messaging, screen, audio, location and more. There's no new interface. It's trained to use a phone and a computer.

The Instinct homepage describing it as a personal assistant with no new interface, with a "Text Instinct to get started" link

You don't need any technical prowess, Mac minis or virtual private servers to use this. You pretty much give it your phone number. Then you can hook it up to your email and your calendar, and even give it payment cards so it can start booking stuff for you.

It's also proactive, which is helpful. It reminds you of things. If there are projects you've been working on, it will check in with you to make sure everything is going to plan, and take the initiative to do stuff on your behalf that it knows needs to get done.

Personal assistants were only ever available to the richest CEOs, and everyone else had to do all of their own life admin. Now AI is bringing this to the masses.

Why Is Everyone Going Crazy for Instinct?

Some of it is the numbers. Instinct raised $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation in September 2026, a month after launching its invite-only service. That's wild, because it isn't built by Anthropic or OpenAI or Google. It was founded by Noah Shinn, who is 23 years old.

The interesting thing is what people use it for. With most of the other apps, people use them for their marketing or their finance, or to get work stuff off their plate. Instinct is great for life admin. That's the biggest use case I'm seeing:

    • Booking restaurants, haircuts and massages
    • Booking flights and checking in
    • Filling in forms and paperwork. I've seen people filling in visa applications for their travel with it
    • Cancelling subscriptions
    • Chasing refunds. People tell it: "Can you email this company every day and chase them down until they give me a refund?"
    • Planning parties

How Is Instinct Different to ChatGPT, Claude and Hermes?

Instinct is proactive like the agents you build yourself, without you having to build anything. It's the best of all of this.

ChatGPT and Claude aren't proactive. You have to log in and you have to prompt. You have to come up with all the ideas, all the problems you want solved and the tasks you want worked on. Yes, you can schedule tasks, but you still have to go in and set up the scheduled task.

Then we saw platforms like OpenClaw and Hermes. I run a Hermes proactive AI agent, but you have to build these. You either buy a Mac mini or a virtual private server, then set it up and maintain it. There are some massive benefits to that, but it's too technical for most people.

Instinct is a little limited. It doesn't give you as much workspace connection as something like Hermes or ChatGPT, which is why people use it more for personal assistant tasks.

There are competitors. Meta has released Muse, its equivalent proactive assistant. You might have heard of Grok Bot, which lets you spin up multiple AI agents. And ChatGPT released its own version recently. But people are flocking to Instinct.

How Do You Set Up Instinct?

Go to instinct.com and click "Text Instinct to get started". I know that sounds obvious, but I've seen so many people go to set up these AI apps, type the name into Google and end up on a knockoff version. Make sure you're on instinct.com.

    1. Click "Text Instinct to get started".
    2. Put your phone number in and hit send code. It pings a code straight to your phone.
    3. Enter the code, then your name and your email, like setting up any other account.
    4. Choose iMessage or WhatsApp. I picked WhatsApp because I'm British and we all use WhatsApp here. It works perfectly well on both.
    5. Scan the code with your phone's camera. It flicks open a chat with Instinct and you can say "Hey, Instinct" straight away.
Instinct's "Start texting Instinct" screen with tabs for iMessage and WhatsApp and a QR code to scan

It didn't log in perfectly for me first time. It took a couple of back and forths, and I forgot to add my invite link. You still had to be invited at the time of recording.

Once you're logged in on your computer, you land on the main workspace. Instinct gets its own phone numbers, one for iMessage and one for WhatsApp, and its own email address. You can forward it emails, or it can use that address to do stuff for you. I guess it has its own little computer underneath, with its own phone numbers and email to work from, just like a real assistant would.

What Happened When I Gave Instinct a Real Job?

It booked the slot, with a short conversation back and forth first. I used my voice to send it this:

Hey, I need to go to the Cornwall Newquay recycling centre today. You have to book a slot in there, so I'm wondering if you can find me a slot either this afternoon or tomorrow morning and book me into the recycling centre, please.

My dictation typed Newquay as "Nuki", so I had to correct it. What's cool is you get reactions on your messages. A little pair of eyes when it's seen your message, a little boomer thumbs up when I corrected it. It almost feels like you're talking to a human, and it's how you know it's working. You do have to be a little bit patient while it goes away and does stuff.

It came back with what the council form needed before it would show slots: what I'm taking, my vehicle registration and whether it's a car or a van, an email for the confirmation, and my home address.

There was nothing left that day, so it gave me four slots for the next morning. I said "Can you do 11am tomorrow morning and add it to my calendar?" It checked which email to use for the confirmation, then went ahead and booked it.

Two WhatsApp screenshots: Instinct lists the four details the council form needs, then offers four morning slots at the recycling centre and confirms the booking details

It took a screenshot of the booking reference on the council website and put the slot in my calendar. The confirmation email landed in my inbox too.

Then I asked it to cancel the booking. The council confirmed it was gone, and Instinct removed it from my calendar as well. That worked too well. Too easy.

Which Apps Can You Connect to Instinct?

Google Workspace, Outlook, Linear, Notion, GitHub, Slack, Granola and Shop Pay were the connectors on my screen. You hit connect and you're good to go.

With Google Workspace hooked up it can see my calendar, look at my emails and work with tasks, Drive, Sheets and Slides. I had loads of tasks on that week, so I could ask Instinct to look at my calendar and block out time for me.

Instinct's connectors list showing Notion, GitHub, Slack, Granola and Shop Pay, with the data privacy section and delete button below

Adding it to Notion is helpful. I have a main task board in Notion, and my Hermes agent, Robin, picks up and delegates tasks there, and I can tag Claude in to go and do stuff. Now I could tag Instinct in as well. You can have humans and AI agents working together on the same board.

Is It Safe to Give Instinct Your Logins and Cards?

It's safe enough if you use a virtual card with a spending limit and keep important logins out of it. Instinct has a vault where you add logins, cards and personal info, and it's just as simple as the rest of the app.

Logins. You click the plus button, add the name of the account, the username, the password and any two-factor authentication. If there's anything I need to authenticate into, I probably don't want to give that login to my AI agent. But it might be something simple, like my Deliveroo account so it can order food for me.

Cards. Adding a credit card sounds scary until you realise you can use a virtual card from your bank. A lot of banking apps let you create a virtual card for online use, with a spending limit or a prepaid amount. I don't recommend giving it full access to your American Express or your bank account. Create a virtual card with a limit of $100 or $500 a day, or only fund it a certain amount. Then it can shop on eBay or book restaurants, but it can't go wild and spend all your money.

Instinct's "Add card" form with fields for name, card number, expiry, CVV and billing ZIP

Personal info. Add your address and phone number here. I gave it my address in the chat, but if I'd already saved it, it wouldn't have had to come back and ask.

What Data Settings Should You Change First?

Turn off "Improve Instinct for everyone" in your preferences. That toggle is automatically on when you start using the app. If you want to make sure your data isn't used for training future models, turn it off.

Instinct's data controls with the "Improve Instinct for everyone" toggle switched off and the delete account button below

You can delete your account and all the data associated with it, but you can't delete data that's already been trained into an AI model. If you had the toggle on and later click delete, it might not delete your data from the training. That's why it's important to turn it off straight away.

There's also a delete button for the external data it has collected from your connected services. Some people have complained that it doesn't work that swiftly. They deleted their data and the connection to Google or Outlook, then got a message an hour later saying "I've checked your emails and this is the information I've got." So some of the data deletion seems a little bit sluggish.

What Are Trusted People in Instinct?

Trusted people lets you link your Instinct to someone else's, so your two agents can talk to each other. I haven't seen anyone else doing this.

You copy your link and send it to your partner or someone in your family. Once we're connected, I could tell it I've booked a trip to the recycling centre tomorrow and ask it to tell my partner's agent to put that in her calendar as well.

Instinct's trusted people page with sections for your link, requests, trusted people, blocked and connections

I've seen people do it for travel, so full itineraries and flight times are shared between the agents and both people's assistants are on the same page. You can train it too. Tell it to always send a type of booking to your partner, and tell it what data you do and don't want it to share.

    Instinct AI FAQ

These are the questions I'd want answered before signing up.

Is Instinct invite only? It was at the time of recording. I had to add my invite link before it would let me in.

Does Instinct work on WhatsApp or iMessage? Both. You pick one when you set up, and Instinct has a number for each.

Is it safe to give Instinct a credit card? I wouldn't give it your main card. Use a virtual card from your banking app with a daily limit or a prepaid amount.

Does Instinct train on my data? The "Improve Instinct for everyone" toggle was on by default for me. Turn it off in preferences as soon as you sign up.

How is Instinct different to ChatGPT? ChatGPT waits for you to log in and prompt it. Instinct is something you text. It keeps track of what you're working on and sometimes acts without being asked.

Can Instinct work with someone else's assistant? Yes. The trusted people section connects your Instinct to another person's so the two can pass things like bookings between them.

What I'm Getting It to Do Next

Next I'm getting it to block the things on my task board into my calendar. Before I finished, I asked it:

What else can you do for me? Give me some ideas of useful things you can take off my plate. I'm a solopreneur business owner who works all day and is strapped for time.

It came back with "Plenty", and a list: finding what's waiting in my inbox, chasing unanswered threads and drafting replies, protecting time in my calendar, following up on invoices and cold leads, errands and bookings like the tip slot, and anything recurring. I've also got an invoice or two to send, and car insurance that needs renewing. I could send it off to argue with the insurer for a discount.

It's probably not super business orientated or connected up to all my systems. But for personal admin, this thing is so easy to use. You hook it up and it starts doing stuff for you. You could set it up for your mum, connect it to her phone, and let it start working for her.

Instinct is invite only, and when I get invite codes like these they go first to my AI community. See what's inside my AI community, Half Day Thursdays: halfdaythursdays.com.
